ABOUT BOGNOR REGIS
It is located in West Sussex, on the south coast of England, 55.5 miles (89 km) south-west of London, 24 miles (39 km) west of Brighton, 5.81 miles (9 km) south-east of Chichester, and 16 miles (26 km) east of Portsmouth. Bognor Regis is also frequently referred to as just Bognor. Other adjacent towns are Littlehampton east-north-east and Selsey to the south-west. Along with North and South Bersted, the neighbouring villages of Felpham and Aldwick have become suburbs of Bognor Regis. The 2011 census found 63,855 people living in the Bognor Regis built-up area, which also includes Felpham and Aldwick.
On a sand and gravel, undeveloped shoreline, Sir Richard Hotham created a beach resort in the late 18th century. It has been said that Sanditon, an unfinished work by Jane Austen, contains a description of Hotham and his new resort. The resort expanded gradually over the first part of the 19th century, but after the arrival of the railway in 1864, it expanded quickly. King George V’s counsellors selected the region in 1929, giving it the regal suffix, by royal assent. Since the town’s first amusement park and zoo debuted in the early 1930s, Butlin’s has been a fixture. In 1960, a vacation camp was established; more recently, this has transitioned to a hotel with contemporary facilities.
